DIABETES AWARNESS & EDUCATION DAY
The project has been created to raise diabetes awareness and support people of African descents particularly African immigrants affected by the condition. Community-practice based intervention is needed to improve diabetes management among this vulnerable population. The program will help the participants make real lifestyle changes such as eat healthier including physical activity into their daily lives and improving problems-solving and coping skills.
LDF Foundation will provide activities such as outreach, education, informal, social support, community, advocacy and information and research support on best practices related to improving the health and wellness of African Immigrants and refugees in the US. Senegal and partnering communities. The seminars, discussions and workshops are targeted to introduce the community and the participants to pertinent health issues. The seminars will provide fundamental educational information regarding health problems.
The LDF foundation also plans on having a community Heritage health fair each year, to draw attention to the power of arts in improving health and wellness. LDFF will provide basic information in ways participants can understand using visual material and storytelling to promote diabetes literacy that includes causes of diabetes and the importance of balance diet, storytelling, exercise, and raising awareness on healthy eating and living. Promotes positive lifestyles.
Coordinators will handed \ diabetes brochures in French, Amharic and English. The brochures are from many published sources as well as from the State and County Departments of Health and Human services.
The participants will be community trained health advocates, focus group research, public health professionals, community leaders, community members and people affected by diabetes. The fairs will be conducted at a community center, high school or any location provided by the state.
The project will promote diabetes literacy in the African community, foster people-to-people partnerships in order maximize resources and opportunities for community education, encourage a community spirit of exercise and healthy nutrition practices, build collaborative partnerships to promote and support the cultivation of African ethnic food through gardening, and the labeling, food portions of African food.
The focus group discussions will provide insightful and valuable information that can be used to initiate and launch effective diabetes education, prevention, risk-reduction and management campaigns and pilot programs.
We will provide newsletters to raise awareness of the benefits and power of the arts improving health & wellness and promote the benefits of making healthy choices to participants. These kinds of activities also make people aware of resources and programs that can help them change their behavior.

Healthcare professionals such as nurses and doctors will provide diabetes on-side diabetes screenings, workshops and panel discussions. Dance instructors will give classes. LDFF will also offer coupons to participants to get low-cost screenings at major pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens. We will offer gift cards to those who provide proof of screening during the event.
